Introduction

A number of years ago I became interested in the way shops were changing in Cambridge where I have lived since 1983. I discovered the Goad maps of Cambridge in the library which are a snapshot of shops and businesses in the centre of Cambridge.

The first map is 1968 and a small section is shown above. I recorded the shops at each address and used the subsequent maps to record changes. Eventually I started doing my own survey at the start of each year.

The first map covered a limited area Sidney Street, St Andrews Street, Regent Street and side streets. It also had an inset for Fitzroy Street and Burleigh Street.

The shops and businesses that were in the 1968 map and are still in roughly the same place include

Barclays Bank - bank - 35 Sidney Street
A. Shepherd - menswear - 32 Trinity Street
Boots - chemist - 28 Petty Cury
Lloyds Bank - bank - 1-5 Sidney Street
A. Jones - footwear - 5 St Andrews Street
The Fountain Inn - pub - 12 Regent Street
J Beazor - antiques - 78-80 Regent Street
Cambridge Building Society - building society - 31-32 St Andrews Street
